AI Metadata Remover
Some AI-generated or AI-edited images carry metadata that records how they were made. This page explains what that data actually is, what CleanImage can remove from the file, and what it cannot.

What people mean by "AI metadata"
Usually one of two things: provenance records that describe how an image was created or edited, or metadata fields that a tool happened to write into the file.
Both live inside the file structure, which is why they can be inspected — and, in many cases, removed by rebuilding the file without them.
Four different things, often confused
These are not interchangeable, and they behave differently:
- EXIF — camera, device and timestamp fields. Some AI tools write software tags here.
- XMP — a flexible metadata format. AI tools and editors can store generation or edit details in XMP fields.
- C2PA / Content Credentials — a signed provenance manifest. It can name the tool that produced or edited a file. Some manifests are cryptographically bound and cannot be removed.
- Pixel-level watermarks — patterns embedded in the image itself. These are not metadata and are not affected by metadata cleaning.
What CleanImage can do
CleanImage re-encodes the image from its pixels. Supported metadata — including XMP blocks, EXIF software tags and C2PA manifests that can be dropped by re-encoding — is not carried into the cleaned copy.
The cleaned file is analysed again, so you can see whether a manifest was actually removed. When a C2PA manifest remains, the report says so plainly.
What CleanImage cannot do
It cannot remove invisible watermarks that are embedded in the pixels, such as SynthID. Nothing that only rewrites file metadata can do that, because the watermark is part of the image itself.
It cannot guarantee that a platform fails to identify an image as AI-generated. Platforms use their own signals — detection models, account behaviour, watermark checks — which are separate from the metadata in the file.
It does not remove visible AI labels that are part of the picture.
Does removing AI metadata hide that an image is AI-generated?
No. Removing metadata removes file-level information. The image content is unchanged and may still be recognisable as AI-generated, and platforms may still apply their own labels.
If you need to remove metadata from an image you own, this tool does that. It does not change what the image is. The difference between AI metadata and AI watermarks is worth understanding before you rely on it.
Disclosure rules may still apply
Depending on where you publish and which platform or contract governs it, you may be required to disclose that content is AI-generated. Removing metadata does not change those obligations. This page is technical information, not legal advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can CleanImage remove AI metadata from a photo?
It removes supported metadata blocks from the file, including XMP and EXIF fields and C2PA manifests that re-encoding can drop. Some C2PA manifests are cryptographically bound and remain — the report tells you which case applies.
Does removing AI metadata remove an AI watermark?
No. Invisible watermarks such as SynthID live in the pixel data, not in metadata. Removing metadata does not touch them, and this tool does not modify the pixels.
Will Instagram or Facebook still detect an AI-generated image?
Possibly. Platforms use their own detection methods that are independent of the file metadata this tool removes. Cleaning a file does not control how a platform classifies it.
Does removing Content Credentials remove the AI label?
It removes the provenance manifest from the file when it can be removed. Whether a platform shows a label depends on that platform's own systems.
Does CleanImage guarantee that an image cannot be identified as AI-generated?
No, and no metadata tool can. It removes supported file metadata and nothing more.
