What is EXIF?
EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. It is a metadata standard written into image files by cameras, phones and editing software.
It was designed to be useful: it records the settings a photo was taken with, so software can display or process the image correctly. That is also why it can hold more than you expect. For the full background, see what EXIF metadata is.
What can EXIF data contain?
Typical EXIF fields include:
- Camera or phone make and model
- Date and time the photo was taken
- Exposure settings — shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focal length
- Lens information
- Orientation, so viewers know how to rotate the image
- GPS coordinates, when the device recorded location and had permission to do so
- Software tags naming the app used to save or edit the file
Can EXIF contain GPS location?
Yes, when the device recorded it. Many phones add GPS coordinates to photos by default, and some cameras do it when location logging is enabled.
If GPS is present, it is stored inside the EXIF block — so removing EXIF removes those coordinates too. The analysis step in the cleaner reports location separately so you can see whether it is there.
How do I remove EXIF data?
Upload the photo to the cleaner on this page and choose Clean. CleanImage decodes the image and re-encodes it, writing only pixel data to the new file. EXIF is not copied across.
The cleaned file is then analysed again. The report shows each category as removed or not removed, so you are not relying on a claim.
Does removing EXIF reduce image quality?
It does not change the dimensions or the visible content of the photo. JPEG and WebP files are re-encoded at high quality rather than copied byte-for-byte, so there can be a small amount of extra compression compared with the original.
If you need a pixel-perfect archive copy, keep the original file and clean a duplicate.
Is EXIF removal permanent?
For the file you download, the EXIF block is not carried over, and CleanImage re-analyses the output to confirm it. Anything that happens later — a platform adding its own metadata, or another app writing new EXIF when you save the image again — is outside the tool's control.

Does the EXIF remover work on PNG and WebP files?
Yes. JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP are supported. PNG and WebP can carry EXIF, XMP and text-based metadata too, and the cleaner handles all three formats.
Can I see what EXIF data is in my photo before removing it?
Yes. Choose Analyze Image to scan the file first. You will see which categories were detected and, in the details panel, example tag values such as camera model.
Does EXIF removal work on photos already uploaded to social media?
CleanImage works on the file you give it. If a platform has already stripped or rewritten metadata, cleaning the downloaded copy only affects what is in that copy.
Why does orientation matter when removing EXIF?
Phones often store a photo in one orientation and record a rotation flag in EXIF. When the EXIF block is removed, that flag goes too, so the cleaner applies the rotation to the pixels first to keep the image looking the same.
