How to Remove GPS Location From a Photo
If a photo was taken with location services enabled, its coordinates may be stored in the file. Here are the practical ways to get rid of them.
First, check whether the photo even has location data
Not every photo carries GPS. Screenshots, images saved from a website and photos taken with location access disabled usually have none.
The quickest check is to look at the file before you share it. Most photo apps have an info panel that lists location when present, and the analysis step in this site's cleaner reports a Location row when GPS fields are found.
Option 1: remove location before other photos are taken
The most effective fix is to stop writing the data in the first place. On iOS you can revoke camera access to location in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera. On Android, the camera app's location permission can be changed in the app's permissions.
This does not change photos you have already taken — it only affects new ones.
Option 2: use your phone's built-in editor
Both iOS and Android offer a way to remove location from a photo you have already taken. On iOS, editing a photo and saving it usually drops the original location, and the Photos app lets you adjust or remove location information for an item. On Android, the Google Photos app has an option to remove location from a photo's details.
Built-in editors are convenient, but behaviour differs between versions and devices. It is worth re-checking the file afterwards if location matters to you.
Option 3: strip the metadata from the file
